The Telekom Austria Group Launches 100 Gigabit Network in CEE

  • Launch of the first commercial 100G network in CEE
  • 42 Points of Presence (PoPs) in 19 countries
  • Improved profitability for the Telekom Austria Group due to optimized network infrastructure
  • First section already in operation in Croatia

The Telekom Austria Group today announced the launch of 100G capacity, a commercial 100 Gigabit transport network, in Central and Eastern Europe, underlining its pioneering role in CEE. The first section of this network from Zagreb to Osijek and Ilok has successfully been trialed and is already in operation. “With this important technology upgrade the Telekom Austria Group will be able to offer redundant high speed data highways to all major cities in the CEE area,” said Darko Parun, Project leader and Director of Group Access and Transport at Telekom Austria Group.

100G Networks Meet Growing Demand for High-Speed Services
The newly launched 100G high-speed services address global telecommunication providers and network operators in CEE, which depend on fast and reliable transport services. The Telekom Austria Group is now able to offer dedicated 100G services with immediate effect to satisfy the ever increasing demand for high-speed services and meet customer demands even more effectively. In the long term, these services will be made available throughout the CEE footprint.

“In the last few months we have further optimized the Telekom Austria Group backbone enabling it to provide service capacities of up to 100 Gigabit/second. As a result, native 100G bandwidth services are immediately available with increased speed and scalability,” said Stefan Amon, Head of the Wholesale Department at the Telekom Austria Group, commenting on the latest upgrade of network capabilities. “By both optimizing network design and upgrading infrastructure the Group is now able to even achieve increased profitability.”

Continued Expansion to 100G throughout the Telekom Austria Group’s Entire International Transport Network
Network capacities will be successively expanded to 100G throughout the Group’s entire network footprint. By the end of the second quarter 2013 the route between Frankfurt and Sofia will see the first 100G services operational. Throughout the remainder of 2013 all major PoPs (Vienna, Sofia, Belgrade, Zagreb, Bucharest, Budapest, Ivancice, Salzburg and Frankfurt) will be connected with 100G technology.

In addition, “triple protection” - i.e. three independent, protected fiber routes from Frankfurt to Sofia – will ensure an extremely high level of fault tolerance and therefore greatly increased service availabilities for Telekom Austria Groups customers.

The Telekom Austria Group as a First Mover in CEE
“We have positioned ourselves as a supplier of high-quality connectivity in the fiercely competitive international wholesale business. To maintain this high proposition in the future, our priorities are own infrastructure and direct contact with major providers,” explained Stefan Amon. The company currently has 42 Points of Presence, most of which are in CEE. Thanks to this pioneering position, the Telekom Austria Group has been able to establish itself as a strong and innovative player in CEE and in the Balkan region.

Implementation of the First 100-Gigabit Route in Vipnet’s Transport Network
Vipnet, the Croatian subsidiary of the Telekom Austria Group, has already implemented a 100G transmission capacity on the route from Zagreb to Osijek and Ilok.
As part of the Group’s international backbone, this ultra-high-speed connection through Croatia enables large transmission capacities to be provided between major Internet and communication hubs in Central and Eastern Europe. Given the constant growth in data traffic the available bandwidths are essential. The use of so-called coherent receivers permits bandwidths ten times higher than those previously available and transmission speeds of up to 100 Gbit/s with the same frequency spectrum.

Upgrading the transmission capacities of Vipnet based on the existing Alcatel-Lucent 100G platform allows a tenfold increase in capacity of Vipnet’s transport network with minimal adjustments of the existing network.

Using 100-Gbit/s significantly reduces the amount of equipment and space needed as well as the power consumption required to realise a single 10-Gbit/s service, and significantly speeds up line implementation time. The reduced complexity of the overall solution also facilitates collaboration and communication between the individual subsidiaries of the Telekom Austria Group.
