- Telekom Austria Group’s innovative service for international network providers
- ‘SIM Box Detection Service’ identifies fraud risks in carrier business
- This technical solution was commercially launched in February 2013
Vienna, June 5, 2013: The much-coveted (GTB) Innovation Awards organized by the English Global Telecoms Business (GTB) magazine were presented in London last night. The Telekom Austria Group was awarded a prize in the category “Wholesale Service Innovation“ for the successful launch of its “SIM Box Detection Service“.
The award ceremony took place for the seventh time in a row and prizes were awarded for projects designed to celebrate the successful and highly innovative collaboration between telecom providers and vendors. Guests at the ceremony included international top experts of the telecom industry. In 2012, BT Wholesale, Cable & Wireless Worldwide and NSN received an award. This year, prizes were awarded in 5 categories: fixed network infrastructure innovation, wireless network infrastructure innovation, wholesale service innovation, business service innovation, consumer service innovation. More than 100 entries were submitted to this year’s competition.
The Telekom Austria Group won a GTB Innovation Award for its ‘SIM Box Detection Service’, a quite unusual communication concept for the wholesale sector, designed to respond to the wide range of fraud scenarios faced by network providers (mobile and fixed net operators as well as MVNOs).
The wholesale business within the telecom industry is characterized by high transfer volumes and very low margins. Network providers are therefore eager to save money by cutting costs as much as possible. However, many operators are hardly aware of SIM box fraudsters, who grab away a relatively high percentage of their turnover, exerting further pressure on margins. The Telekom Austria Group has therefore developed an innovative ‘SIM Box Detection Service’, which protects against all types of SIM box fraud based on the company’s global testing infrastructure.
Stefan Amon, Director Wholesale at Telekom Austria Group, formally accepted the award at last night’s GTB Innovation Summit in London: “SIM box fraud is increasingly becoming a problem for network operators worldwide. Telecom providers lose up to 6% of their voice revenues due to SIM box fraud, without even knowing it. This is why we are particularly delighted that our service, which has been globally available since February 2013, has won this much-coveted award. At the same time, this prize also motivates us to continue to defend the interests of our customers and business partners and to protect their companies based on even smarter innovations.“
The commercial launch of the service was preceded by a 12-month product development phase, where customer needs were identified and assessed based on detailed market analysis. In addition, in-depth interviews with customers and anti-fraud experts of the Group’s single subsidiaries were carried out at the local level. The commercial launch of this specialized service took place in February 2013.
