Vipnet first Operator in the Group with successful Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) Trial

  • Vipnet among the first operators in Europe to present NFV trial
  • Trial marks 15 years of innovation at Vipnet
  • Virtualising the network - NFV as technological milestone in the Telco industry
  • Trials in other operating countries to further NFV roll-out are planned

Today, Vipnet announced that it is among the first European Telecom operators to successfully complete the Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) trial. The second oldest subsidiary within Telekom Austria Group commenced operations in 1999 and today celebrates 15 years of innovation, highlighted by the successful NFV trial.

Vipnet demonstrated HD video streaming made possible by combining LTE technology and NFV. The demonstration showed that in the coming years customers will record and directly stream their smartphone content and multimedia onto a cloud based memory storage via a virtualised infrastructure. Thanks to NFV, consumers will no longer need to offload content from their Smarthpones to their computer. This will make it much more convenient and will also achieve better data loss protection.

"We are absolutely confident that the NFV technology is a defining trend in the mobile industry. We are therefore very pleased with Vipnet's initiative to explore and implement NFV. The success and efficiency goes along with the 15th anniversary of innovation strategy at Vipnet. For Telekom Austria Group, this is just the beginning of a journey to explore the latest technologies and further improve services for our customers, performance, experience or availability", comments Günther Ottendorfer, CTO of Telekom Austria Group.

NFV is a substantial change in the way telecommunication infrastructure is deployed and will bring significant changes to the way that applications are delivered to service providers. NFV will realise cost efficiencies and speed up time-to-market for applications. Furthermore it will enable significant benefits through deployment of virtualised network applications on shared infrastructure also it brings additional benefits through the IT like layering.

Mladen Pejkovic, CEO Vipnet, comments on the trial, "We are more than pleased that Vipnet counts among one of the first operators in Europe to showcase the NFV technology. NFV is not only an important topic within the Telco industry today´s showcase also strongly emphasizes our successful 15 years innovation strategy."

NFV is an important development for the entire telecommunications industry and in accordance to the Group´s technology strategy, the Telekom Austria Group strives to become a leader in this area with several NFV trials already underway across the Group, emphasising infrastructure leadership as an important key for differentiation.

The interest in network virtualization has been growing steadily among the networking community in the last few years. NFV was born in 2012 when AT&T, BT, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom and many other other Telcos introduced the "NFV Call to Action document". In order to increase velocity, a new committee was set up under the ETSI the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. This committee will work on creating the requirements and architecture blueprints as basis for implementation and resulting in standards of IETF.
