Together, with its partner Affirmative Networks, the Bulgarian subsidiary demonstrated HD video streaming made possible by combining Long Term Evoltuion (LTE) technology and NFV. The demonstration showed how it is possible to stream via a NFV enhanced Packet Core through an LTE network, that in the coming years will allow customers to record and directly stream their smartphone content and multimedia onto a cloud based memory storage. As a result of NFV, consumers will no longer need to offload content from their Smarthpones to their computer. This will make it much more convenient and will also achieve better data loss protection.

"We are very proud that the Telekom Austria Group has once again demonstrated our strength and the achievements previously gained in relation to the NFV strategy. It is great to be able to show how we are continuing to demonstrate our commitment towards innovation across all of the Group's subsidiaries", said Günther Ottendorfer, CTO of Telekom Austria Group.

Mobiltel CTO, Horst Pertl, states about the trial: "The successful start of the NFV technology is a result of the continuous investment the Group makes towards the development of technologies, IT infrastructure and products. Our planned investment for 2014 equals more than EUR 100 million . As one of the first European operators to trial NFV we are proud to successfully contribute to the Telekom Austria Group technology strategy."

NFV is an important development for the entire telecommunications industry, and in accordance to our technology strategy, the Telekom Austria Group strives to become a leader in this area with several NFV trials already underway across the Group, emphasising infrastructure leadership as an important differentiator.

The interest in network virtualisation has been growing steadily among the networking community in the last few years. NFV originated in 2012 when AT&T, BT, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom and many other Telcos introduced the "NFV Call to Action document". In order to increase velocity, a new committee was set up under the ETSI the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. This committee will work on creating the requirements and architecture blueprints as basis for implementation and resulting in standards of IETF.
